After a tough year, we’ve got exciting news to share with you!

Both salons in Gloucester Road and Harbourside have secured finalist places in three categories in HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2021.

Now in its 23rd year, the awards recognise hardworking names that have built outstanding salon businesses, so to be amongst some of the most respected individuals in the industry is an honour for us.

We are finalists for Business Director of the Year, Salon Team of the Year, and the coveted Salon of the Year 2 award (which we have won twice before and are the current holders of).

Owner, Joe Hemmings says: ‘We are thrilled to have made the finals of such a respected event. The last 16 months have been incredibly challenging for us all but the team have pulled together with focus and determination and shown true resilience in the toughest of times. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved, both as a business and an industry at large.’

Bloggs Salons made the final stage of the competition after compiling detailed entries outlining the exceptional team spirit that has helped cement their success as a salon. The judges have been drawn to Joe’s unique way of working with the team by adapting training and career plans in a way that suits both their needs and our clients’.

Joe’s coaching approach to management and his efforts to facilitate a ‘mums back to work’ initiative by tailoring shifts to accommodate the needs of parents around school commitments has ensured a motivated team, and the continued return of loyal clients.

Most Wanted 2021 Business Thinker Finalist

Huge congratulations to our boss man Joe Hemmings, shortlisted for another of the most revered awards in the hair industry – Most Wanted Business Thinker! Awarded to a salon owner or director who can demonstrate an outstanding approach to business, this entry entailed a hefty portfolio of Joe’s ideas and motivation with the evidence of success to back it up.

The Most Wanted awards feature 13 categories and it’s the job of a prestigious panel of experts across hair, fashion, business and media to establish the frontrunners. Influential names including Sonia Haria, beauty director of the Telegraph Group; Claudia Croft, editor of 10 Magazine and contributing editor for Vogue; Shannon Peter, beauty director of Stylist magazine; Denise Baden, Professor of Sustainable Business, University of Southampton, salon owners Mark Maciver, Errol Douglas MBE and Sophia Hilton, as well as leading session artists Nick Irwin and Leigh Keates, were among the judges deliberating over this year’s entries.

Creative HEAD editor, Amanda Nottage says: "We know British and Irish hairdressing has faced an awful lot over the past 18 months, but I'm convinced that the fervour, the passion and the energy that everyone has shown in these record-breaking Most Wanted entries illustrate an unwavering optimism and positivity, as well as a desire to share with others their stories and achievements during such challenging times that I just am so proud of."

Joe says: ‘We are thrilled to have made the finals of two such respected events. Behind every small, independent business is a passionate owner who’s brought their vision to life. For us, that person is Joe Hemmings. Joe’s original mission statement when we first opened was to “create something special that we can be proud of, and that betters people’s lives.”

Joe says, “To me, creating something special is making someone remember how you made them feel, going against the grain and standing out for all the right reasons. We know that colour is a particular concern after being closed so long, so our two colour-specialist salons based in the heart of Bristol on Gloucester Road and Harbourside, already have a waiting list available for clients to book onto.

How can you make thinning and fine hair look thicker?

We know that due to lockdown, your hair may be bearing the brunt of Covid-19, with missed salon appointments and salon closures. We cannot wait to get back into our two beautiful salons in Bristol and tend to neglected locks. In the meantime, we want to share some ways in which you can make thin, limp hair look more alive from the comfort of your own home!

Length:

Shorter styles can add body and texture around the face. Think Judy Dench and Helen Mirren, both of whom have opted for this trick to add movement and shape. In straying away from longer tresses, you accentuate your cheekbones, and adding a fringe will also give the appearance of luxe full hair around the face, distracting from finer hair. Even though you’re currently unable to have your hair cut, make a mood board of what styles you like and on reopening, the Bloggs team will be ready to create your dream look.

Colour:

If you’re going grey, we suggest working with a lighter base to avoid anything dark on your roots, which will only magnify finer hair. Instead, use colouring techniques such as highlights to add body. Pre-lightener is great on shorter cuts as it gently swells the cuticle and can make your hair feel thicker. Of course, you should leave this to the experts! We’ll do a full colour consultation to choose the right shades and placement for maximum impact and as a colour specialist hair salon in Bristol, we pride ourselves in providing our clients with colours and styles to enhance their look.

Product:

Even though we are unable to provide you with our hair services in this current climate, there are products you can use at home to nurture lifeless locks. Shampoos and conditioners with the ingredients vitamin b6 and biotin are great for giving hair a boost and when it comes to styling products, ensure you use heat protection sprays, which will give volume and structure to the hair as it dries. Salt spray is also great to give a boost of texture and inject hair with life for those Monday morning zoom calls.

Our easy blow-dry step-by-step to try at home:

Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
Pop your hair in a microfiber towel to remove excess water (you can buy these online).
Apply your styling product such as a salt or heat protection spray.
Ensure your hairdryer is on a low heat and speed setting to avoid damage to the hair.
Hold your hair in the direction you want it to fall.
Using your free hand, move in a circular motion on the scalp to create a massaging motion. This will add some texture and volume.

Huge Recognition For Our Bristol Salon

Creative HEAD’s Most Wanted Awards include some of the biggest names in the hair, beauty and fashion industries, each recognised for their passion, ambition and skill at the highest level.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the competition with a record number of entries. The competition holds 14 categories, with Bloggs Salons, Bristol being named as a finalist for the ‘Best Salon Team’ category sponsored by Paul Mitchell. Although many entered, once again Bloggs’ team has been recognised for our dedication to the Bristol public, nurtured by Joe Hemmings who encourages us to explore creative ideas to create outstanding results.

Salon owner Joe Hemmings handed out a number of accolades to the team.

2020 sees Bloggs Salons celebrate our 10-year anniversary of offering award-winning haircuts in Bristol. To mark this milestone, salon owner Joe Hemmings handed out a number of accolades to the team.

The salon hosted a creative hair competition themed ‘Under the Sea’ where the winners included Becca Addison for her ‘Mood Board story’, Rachel White for ‘Most Expressive’, Sarah Clements for ‘Best Total Look’ and finally Destiny Linwood, who won the ‘Young Star Award’. Further team members were recognised for their performance throughout 2019 including ‘5 Star Service Award’ to Maria Guatieri. The ‘Team’s Team Member of the Year’ was received by Hannah Tovey, Maz Meech received ‘Most Developed’, Hannah Tovey ‘Above and Beyond’, and finally, Bloggs ‘Star of the Year’ was received by Chloe Jones.

Our friendly team spans from the ages of 17-69, with the salons creating career paths for individuals instead of using a ‘one size fits all’ model. We specialise in all areas of hair and can’t wait to welcome you into the salon.

Colour Specialists up for another award.

We are delighted to have been nominated as a grand finalist for the 2020 L’Oreal Colour Trophy Star Award.

As a colour specialist salon in Bristol, it is with great pride that we have been recognised by such a well-respected establishment in the hair industry and be the only salon in Bristol to have been named as a grand finalist within this category. Destiny Linwood, who is nominated for this award, runs our re-opened Harbourside nail bar and has also recently been named as a finalist at this year’s British Hairdressing Business Awards in the Assistant/Junior of the Year category.

Destiny has been recognised previously as Concept Hair’s Learner of the Year and won the ‘Young Star Award’ at our own salon awards evening. Like the rest of our team, Destiny prides herself in offering 5 star services to the locals of Bristol and we are extremely proud she has been recognised for her hard work.
